realisations (poem)
realise your head has been hollowed out and used as a drum without your permission
get angry about this
realise you could piss off a lot of people just by saying no
realise you want to give yourself that freedom
realise your teeth have been clenched together for years
realise it's not your fault
realise you won't exist forever
realise you don't need to
realise you're doing better than you give yourself credit for
realise the best part of the sunset is happening now and if you look away you'll miss the clouds catching fire
realise you love curling up with a good book and speaking to no one
realise you love going to bed early
realise you can't make a cat cuddle with you, or tell a cat what to do
realise your brain has a lot in common with a cat
realise you've been seeing yourself through the eyes of people who are determined to see the worst in you
realise you've been polite to a lot of people who don't deserve it
realise you've cared for the feelings of those who are clearly stepping on yours
realise sexual harassment is a form of bullying and they want to punish you for their desires
realise you can walk out of the horror film your anxiety is screening for you in your own mind
you can simply leave the theatre and get ice cream instead
realise you're past the age when your parents had you
realise you know as much as they seemed to know when you were little
realise they knew as little as you know now
realise that making everyone around you happy is not your job, and is also impossible
realise you can't run around an autumn forest and pin all the leaves back onto the trees
you just have to sit in the golden sunlight and watch them fall
